Expectations: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, Be Safe.

Materials: Bring a composition notebook specifically for ELA, a personal reading book for independent reading, as well as something to write with to class every day. Returned writing will be kept in a portfolio in the classroom for future use.

Personal Reading Books: In order to grow as a reader, it is important to have a book to read at all times. Your child may select a book from the Hernandez library, from my classroom library, from a local book store, or from a friend.  It is important that your seventh grader has a book to read at school at all times. As a parent, if your child has selected a book with content or theme that you question, simply ask him/her to select another book.  There are so many good books to choose from!

Process: 10% of overall grade -  Examples: homework, notebook checks, reading checks, materials checks, etc.

Grading Policy: Teachers will provide reteaching and retesting for students to improve grades. Students may attend any 7th grade teacher’s tutorials. Reteaching is required for retesting. Students will need to provide evidence of reteach before retake. Reteach and retest must be scheduled by the student within two weeks of receiving grades, with the exception of the last week of the marking period. Then they have until Wednesday of the last week to complete the reteach and retest. No late work will be accepted during the last week of the unit.

Evaluation of Student Work: Student work will be evaluated on 5 levels of proficiency: unobserved, beginning, developing, proficient, and advanced. Proficient is the level of knowledge and skill as put forth by the state.

Every student's goal should be to reach proficiency on all learning goals and strive toward advanced when possible. Students will keep a record to track their progress. This record should be kept in a folder or binder they can bring to class and home to aid communication on their progress.

Retesting: Students are allowed to retest and/or do an alternate assignment up to two weeks after its completion date to show improvement of understanding of learning goals. Students will be allowed to do so after they show an attempt to improve their understanding by: attending tutorials, rereading information relating to the learning goal, practicing the skill presented, and other options as discussed.
